Welcome back to another school year! We hope that you enjoyed your summer. We are very excited to be your child’s teachers and are looking forward to a successful year.
SUPPLIES/LABELS
As the school year begins, here are some suggestions that will help make the school year a success.
Please label all items that your child brings and/or leaves at school. Things like coats, hats, lunch boxes, boots, and mittens should have your child’s first and last name clearly written on them.
Please ensure that your child has some sort of bag for transporting their school work and other school materials.
Send in a plain white T-shirt for your child to wear in gym class and possibly while substitute teachers are in the classroom. Your child’s first and last name will be written on the front and back of this shirt. It is possible to use and reuse the same shirt year after year.
Our supplies are used by all, but some children do keep a minimal amount of personal supplies in their desk space. Please try to avoid large binders, and supplies that may prove to be distracting (sparkly pens/pencils, zig-zag scissors, anything that lights up or makes sounds).
SCHOOL POLICY/SCHEDULES
Tardy/Absences
Good school attendance leads to good education. Many of the learning opportunities that your child will experience will be hands-on and interactive. Therefore, it is not always possible for your child to make-up missed class work. Based on Michigan law, all children must attend school on a regular basis. Any child who is absent must bring an excuse signed by a parent or legal guardian when she/he returns to the classroom.
Tardy = students arriving after 9:00am
Half-day absent = students arriving after 9:10am
Half-day absent = students leaving prior to 3:15pm and prior to 11:40 on half days
School Lunch/Breakfast Program
School hot lunch is $2.00
School Grab & Go lunch is $2.25
Milk is $.50
Breakfast is $1.00
Please send money for lunch in a sealed envelope with your child’s first and last name and homeroom number written clearly. Payment can either be cash or check made payable to Paddock Elementary School. Your child will have a debit card here at school for purchasing a school lunch/breakfast or milk. Periodically, the food service staff will send home a notice about the amount currently in your child’s account.
Recess
Your child will participate in outdoor recess everyday – weather permitting. Please send healthy, prepared children to school so that they can fully participate in their recess. Michigan weather changes frequently please plan accordingly with your child – outdoor wear may include boots, jackets, heavy coats, and snow gear. Some families will label items and store them here at school – winter boots and snow pants.
The temperature inside the classroom changes frequently. We suggest that your child dress in layers.
Special Schedule
Your child is scheduled to attend and actively participate in “Special Classes.” Classes will rotate on an A Day, B Day, and C Day schedule. Please be mindful of this rotation so your child is prepared for classes (gym shoes on the correct day).

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES/POLICIES
Volunteers
We love volunteers! Throughout the school year we will have many opportunities for family members and friends to volunteer in and for the classroom. This may include chaperoning a field trip, helping with centers, clerical work (copies, filing), or directly working with students during learning times. As our schedule firms up and as we schedule trips, we will contact you through the newsletter, by phone, or by email. If you know of a time when you are interested in helping out, please let us know. If you surprise us with a visit, we will do our best to make you comfortable and get you helping in the best possible way. All volunteers must be approved through Ichat. If you have already been approved, it keeps you in the system for 3 years. If you have not yet begun the process, bring your valid driver's license to the Paddock main office and fill out the paper work. The paper work takes two weeks to process. Thank you for supporting your child's safety!
Holiday/Birthday Celebrations
If your child celebrates their birthday, and you want to send in some sort of healthy treat for all of the children, please do so (52 students currently). If you are sending in a treat, please contact one of the teachers at least a day in advance. We will find a time during the day when the children can eat and enjoy the healthy snack. Your child will receive a birthday ribbon on their birthday and we will sing to them if they like. Holiday parties will follow the school calendar. Please reference the table for details. Our party coordinator will contact you by phone or email about sending snacks for holiday parties. You are not required to send in treats. We have a number of students with food allergies ~ nuts as well as cherries, and red dye. All food items must be safe for students. Sending in a non-food item to celebrate a birthday is a good idea you may want to consider.
October – Halloween
December – Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, New Year – winter celebrations
February – Valentine’s Day
June – end of year picnic
Homework
Homework will be sent home on Friday and will be on pink paper. It is to be completed and returned by the following Friday morning unless otherwise noted. We understand that families lead busy lives, please check with your child on Friday to review homework. Establishing a routine for completing quality homework is a critical part of your child’s school career. Homework is given in order to provide students with more time to practice a new concept/skill. Reviewing your child’s homework also keeps you informed about what they are learning while in school. Good work habits are important to establish early, please support your child. Homework is your child’s responsibility, but they may need gentle reminders about completing and returning it. If your child is unable to complete their homework, please have your child speak with their teacher for further instruction or clarification. You may also send in a note or call with your questions. Ultimately, it is your child’s responsibility to complete and return their homework on time. If they fail to accurately complete and return their work on time, they will receive a red “Yikes” note on Friday. Children completing their work will receive a green “Yahoo” note. Please look for these notes with their Friday Folder (see below). **Sending homework on Friday is a change from past practice ~ please make note of this change.
Newsletter
The Multiage newsletter is sent home on Monday. The paper will be yellow to help you recognize it. Look for upcoming events, supplies needed, and reports about classroom happenings.
Take Home Folder
Your child has a folder labeled as their “Take Home Folder.” This folder should be used to transport papers back and forth between home and school. We will remind children to check their bags and Take Home Folders each morning and afternoon – to organize work, return work, hand in notes, etc. Let’s work together to help your children organize their paperwork!
Friday Folder/Portfolio
School work will be collected throughout the week. On Friday, children will sort through their work samples and choose one piece to be kept in a permanent portfolio. The remaining pieces will be taken home on Friday in a folder. Please return the folder on Monday and the cycle begins again. We plan to host Student Led Conferences each year. SLC are conferences where your child shares his/her work with you. It is a comfortable and happy way to learn about how your children spend their days here at school.
Classroom Rules
Our one main rule is RESPECT. Respect for the rights of others and self. Respect for the feelings of others. Respect for authority. Respect for property. Respect for the world. In general, we strive to help children to be intrinsically motivated – not to rely on extrinsic rewards for behavior. We have high expectations for ourselves and the children in our classrooms. Our classroom community is important and we support each individual child with his/her individual needs.
